Spirit Hacking: Shamanic Keys to Reclaim Your Personal Power, Transform Yourself, and Light Up the World

A shaman's guide to leaving a conformist, consumer-driven life, with short rituals for finding your real desires, quieting the inner critic, honoring your ancestors and reconnecting with the natural world.

Table of Content

If your days follow a script you never chose, school, job, mortgage, and something still feels off, Shaman Durek has a name for that script. In Spirit Hacking, Durek, who sees himself as the sixth shaman in his line, calls it the matrix: a hidden set of rules that steers people toward a safe, mediocre life and keeps them shopping to dull the ache.

His way out is shamanism, an ancient practice built on the belief that we are surrounded by spirits and energies we were never taught to see. Step outside the matrix and work with those unseen forces, he argues, and you can learn what you truly want, quiet the voice that says you are not enough, and reconnect with your family line and with nature. Each idea arrives with a short ritual, from five candles in a dark room to a square traced in the air before a flower.

A well-paid job and a family home look like success, yet many people who have both still feel trapped. Durek believes the trap was built long before you chose anything, and that it shapes how you judge other people too.

We are taught that only what we can see and touch is real. Shamans have worked from the opposite assumption for as long as humans have existed, and Durek claims he lives it in every session.

The car, the house and the title may not be your own desires at all. Durek names the force that plants them, and offers a five-minute ritual with fire to rebuild a will that has gone soft.

Most ambitious people assume their dreams sit at the far end of years of struggle. Durek thinks that assumption is the delay itself, and his fix is a small change in the words you use.

The voice telling you that you will never be good enough sounds exactly like your own. Durek offers a startling explanation of where it comes from, and a calm, standing ritual for sending it away.

Some aches and some fears about money seem to have no cause in your own life. Durek traces them further back, to people you may never have met, and suggests a simple table at home as the place to start.

We go online for almost every answer, yet Durek insists an older network sits within reach of anyone who steps outside. His ritual involves a flower, a finger and two shapes drawn in the air.

Durek’s book adds up to a single invitation: stop treating the life you were handed as the only one on offer. The matrix supplies a narrow road, a set of boxes and a stream of things to buy, while the darkness keeps people sorting each other into good and bad. Against both, Durek sets a world full of presences most of us were taught to ignore: spirits in trees and flowers, ancestors at our side, even the troubled souls he believes speak through our worst thoughts.

The rituals give shape to a few plain acts you can start this week. Sit with one honest desire long enough to know it is yours. Say a goal aloud as if it were already true. When the inner critic speaks, question it before you obey it. Set a candle beside a photo of someone who came before you.

Durek ends with a challenge rather than comfort. A system built to trap you, he says, is no excuse for standing still. Look hard at how you live and ask whether you could give more to other people or to Gaia. Asked honestly, that question is the first step out of the matrix.

About this book

What is this book about?

Plenty of people follow the expected path of good school, steady job and mortgage, and still feel something is wrong. Shaman Durek says that feeling is accurate. In his view, an unseen system he calls the matrix steers us toward a safe but mediocre life. It sorts us into boxes and keeps us numb with junk food, pills and shopping, and behind it stands what he calls the darkness: everything in the universe that is out of step with love. His alternative is shamanism, an ancient practice built on the belief that the world holds endless dimensions and that people, trees, stones and flowers all carry a spirit. From that starting point, Durek reframes everyday struggles. Desires come from advertising and celebrity culture. Time is not a straight line. A harsh inner voice may belong to a trapped spirit, and some chronic pain may be inherited from ancestors. Each idea comes with a practice you can try at home: fire scrying with five candles, speaking goals in the present tense, questioning the inner critic, building an ancestor altar and connecting with the spirit of a flower.

Ever wonder why you feel stuck in the same cycles of negativity even when you're trying your hardest to change? This book offers a refreshing, albeit unconventional, toolkit for breaking those old beliefs that keep us anchored to a lower version of ourselves. Durek’s energy is palpable on every page, and his willingness to be vulnerable about his own 'death' and resurrection makes the advice feel grounded in experience. I love how he simplifies complex spiritual concepts into easy-to-understand actions that anyone can implement immediately without needing years of training. Reclaiming my personal power has never felt so accessible, and I truly felt a shift in my environment after practicing the energy clearing techniques. It isn’t just another New Age fluff piece; it’s a manual for those ready to do the heavy lifting required for a real life-change. Frankly, the world needs more of this blunt, pure energy right now to wake us up from our collective slumber.

After hearing so much buzz about this title, I finally dove in and I’m honestly surprised by how much it impacted my daily routine. The structure is fantastic because it takes you through the content step-by-step, making sure you actually understand the 'why' before moving on to the 'how.' I’ve read a lot of books on shamanism, but Durek’s approach feels uniquely modern and tailored for the world we actually live in today. He talks about 'hacking' your spirit not as a shortcut, but as a way to bypass the mental garbage that keeps us from our true potential. The chapter on ancestral heritage was particularly powerful for me, helping me visualize the energetic threads connecting me to my past. While his tone is definitely loud and unapologetic, there’s an underlying compassion that shines through if you’re willing to listen. This is a must-read for anyone who feels like they’ve exhausted the usual self-help shelf and needs something with more teeth.

This book is absolutely brimming with pure energy and a fierce love for humanity’s potential that I haven’t found in other New Age texts. Durek isn't interested in being your 'guru' in the traditional sense; he wants you to become your own healer and take responsibility for the energy you put out. His insights on the connection between our internal state and the health of the Earth were particularly moving and made me rethink my lifestyle choices. By breaking down old belief systems, he makes space for something much more authentic and powerful to take root within the reader's psyche. The step-by-step nature of the book ensures that you aren't just reading theory, but actually performing the work to change your life. It's easy to read, engaging, and feels like a direct transmission from someone who has actually walked through the fire. I feel more empowered and 'awake' than I have in years after finishing these chapters.

Picked this up after seeing Durek on Netflix and I wasn't sure what to expect given his polarizing reputation. While the prose is definitely 'lit' and heavy on modern slang, the core message about dismantling our inherited limitations felt genuinely useful. He doesn't just offer vague platitudes; he provides a step-by-step roadmap for reclaiming your internal energy from what he calls 'the matrix.' Some might find his delivery a bit aggressive or even abrasive at times, but I appreciated the raw authenticity behind his words. It feels less like a traditional textbook on shamanism and more like a high-energy conversation with a mentor who isn't afraid to hurt your feelings to help you grow. I don't agree with every single 'hack' he proposes, especially the ones that sound like commanding a cosmic Siri, but the overall shift in perspective was worth the read. It’s a bold, unapologetic look at how we can stop being 'bobbleheads' and actually take responsibility for our lives.

Finally got around to finishing this, and I have to say the practical exercises are what really saved the experience for me. Shaman Durek has a very 'in-your-face' style that might turn off traditionalists, but his 'spirit hacks' are actually quite effective for shifting your mood and focus. I particularly appreciated the section on how we let outside energies—what he calls 'the matrix'—dictate our self-worth and how to actively shut that down. The truth is, most of us are walking around like zombies, and his blunt delivery is exactly the kind of cold water to the face we need. I did find the repetitive nature of some chapters a bit tedious, and his ego definitely takes center stage more than I’d like. But if you can look past the bravado, there is a wealth of knowledge here about breaking free from toxic patterns and reclaiming your joy. It’s a solid 4-star read for the seekers who don't mind a little grit with their grace.

As someone who has always been skeptical of the 'Silicon Valley' approach to spirituality, I was pleasantly surprised by the depth of some of these techniques. Durek treats spirits almost like a sophisticated operating system, which might sound weird, but it actually makes the concepts very accessible for a modern audience. The book is written in a way that keeps your attention, avoiding the dense, flowery language that often makes spiritual books a chore to get through. Not gonna lie, some of his stories about his friends being 'low-vibration' or 'stupid' felt a bit mean-spirited and unnecessarily judgmental. However, the actual 'hacks' for clearing negative energy and connecting with your higher self are genuinely transformative if you give them a fair shot. It’s a polarizing book for a polarizing time, and it definitely forced me to examine my own biases about what a 'real' shaman should look like. If you want a guide that feels like a jolt to the system, this is it.

Wow. I didn't realize how much I needed to hear some of these truths until I was halfway through the first chapter. Durek has this incredible gift for making you feel like he’s speaking directly to your soul, cutting through all the excuses we make for why we aren’t living our best lives. The way he describes reclaiming your power from the 'darkness' is so vivid and visceral that it feels like you're undergoing a healing ceremony just by reading. I found the instructions to be very clear and easy to follow, which is a relief compared to other esoteric books that are intentionally vague. This is life-changing material for anyone who is tired of playing small and is ready to step into their own mystical heritage. It’s authentic, raw, and full of the kind of 'spirit hacks' that can actually shift your reality in real-time. While his personality is certainly 'extra,' the underlying message is incredibly solid and grounded.

To be fair, there is some genuinely insightful stuff here regarding how we interact with the spirit world and our own psychology. Shaman Durek is clearly a talented storyteller, and his perspective on how we are all interconnected with the Earth’s energy is a much-needed wake-up call for our generation. However, I struggled significantly with some of the more controversial takes near the end of the book regarding the LGBTQ+ community and 'darkness.' It felt contradictory to his message of empowerment and unconditional love, leaving a bit of a sour taste in my mouth after such a compelling start. The 'spirit hacks' themselves are interesting, though some feel more like sci-fi scripts than ancient rituals, involving 'beaming down' energy like something out of a movie. I’d recommend it with reservations: take the parts that resonate with your growth and leave the more problematic rants behind. It’s a mixed bag of brilliant spiritual innovation and frustrating personal biases.

Not what I expected from a book that claims to be a guide to ancient wisdom and spiritual evolution. The narration of the audiobook—read by Durek himself—was incredibly distracting, as he often sounds genuinely angry or even condescending toward his audience. He spends a lot of time trashing other spiritual leaders like Eckhart Tolle while positioning himself as the only 'true' shaman left on the planet. It’s hard to take the 'spirit hacks' seriously when they are framed with such an aggressive, gatekeeping attitude that seems to lack any real humility. I found the constant use of slang like 'on fleek' or 'lit' to be totally jarring and it took away from the gravity of the topics being discussed. Instead of feeling empowered, I felt like I was being yelled at by someone who is more interested in his own celebrity than in helping others. The advice to 'command' spirits also felt spiritually immature and lacked reverence.

Look, I really wanted to enjoy this because the concept of biohacking through a spiritual lens is fascinating to me. Unfortunately, the book reads more like a manifesto for Shaman Durek’s own massive ego rather than a helpful guide for the reader. Between the forward by Dave Asprey and Durek’s constant rants about 'fake shamans,' the whole thing felt like one long, expensive commercial for a specific brand of elitist spirituality. He uses terms like 'mystical AF' which just feels like he's trying way too hard to appeal to a younger, Silicon Valley demographic. Most of the 'spirit hacks' are just commands you're supposed to shout at the universe, which feels incredibly shallow compared to traditional indigenous practices. It’s frustrating because there are kernels of truth about energy and responsibility buried under layers of self-congratulatory anecdotes and pseudo-neuroscience. If you’re looking for deep, humble wisdom, you might want to look elsewhere, as this feels more like a tech-bro's fever dream of enlightenment.

Questions about this book

Durek argues that an invisible system he calls the matrix pushes people along a conventional, consumer-driven path that leaves them unfulfilled. The matrix serves what he calls the darkness, everything out of step with love. His way out is shamanism: the belief that spirits and energies surround us, and that working with them helps you find your authentic self, heal inner wounds and reconnect with your ancestors and with nature.

Durek sees the matrix as a hidden system of rules that carries people along a path running through school, then college, then work, and finally death. It sorts us into boxes such as race, gender and religion, numbs us with junk food, pills, alcohol and caffeine, and uses the high glamor of fashion, social media and celebrity culture to plant shallow desires for cars, houses and status.

Fire scrying is a technique Durek links to African shamans, who believe fire sharpens perception. In a dark room, sit with four candles around you at the points of the compass and a fifth in front. Light them, set a timer for five minutes, and gaze at the front flame while holding one thought, such as a dream job. He says it strengthens your will and clarifies what you truly want.

Durek believes the voice saying you are not good enough may belong to a spirit trapped in the underworld after an unresolved trauma. He recommends standing with arms folded in a strong stance, then calmly questioning the voice, asking whether it is such a spirit and why it has followed you. When you have grasped what it is, you announce that you are bringing it back to the light.

It suits readers who feel boxed in by a conventional life and are open to a spiritual, shamanic view of the world. Those curious about rituals will find concrete ones to try, including candle gazing, speaking goals in the present tense, building an ancestor altar and connecting with the spirit of a flower. Readers who want scientific methods may prefer other books.
