Headway vs Blinkist: An Honest Comparison and a Cheaper Alternative

Headway vs Blinkist: An Honest Comparison and a Cheaper Alternative

On the surface, Headway and Blinkist sell the same thing: a nonfiction book in about 15 minutes, as text or audio. The difference is in how each wants you to use it. Blinkist is a library you dip into; Headway is a coach that tries to build a daily habit with quizzes and streaks. If you would rather choose by goal and follow ordered reading paths by ear, Guri Wise, the app we make, is a third option.

We read every Headway and Blinkist fact on the company’s own pages and App Store listings on October 6, 2026; each one links to its source.

Same 15 minutes, two different apps

Both apps give you a nonfiction book as text and audio in about 15 minutes; Headway puts its audio at 15 to 20 minutes. What surrounds the summary is where they part ways.

Headway is built around a routine. Its frequently asked questions (FAQ) page describes a personalized learning plan that starts with an onboarding quiz, Shorts in four interactive formats, Recaps, Streaks, Highlights, a choice of voices and widgets. Premium adds daily insights, curated collections and spaced-repetition tools.

Blinkist is built around a library. Its pricing page lists books, podcasts and expert-led guides, offline listening, a place to save and organize titles, and personalized recommendations. Pro adds Blinkist AI, which condenses links and documents you supply.

Calling one a library and the other a coach is our framing, not either company’s. If spaced repetition appeals to you but you would rather not add another app, you can schedule it yourself: How to Remember What You Read explains what the research supports.

Headway app review: what works and what to check

Headway says its summaries are “written and reviewed by a real team of people, not generated automatically”, that it adds three to five new titles a week, and that its library is mostly nonfiction with a small selection of classic fiction (FAQ page). It gives its catalog as 2,500+ book summaries, while its App Store description says 1,500+. It runs in native iPhone and Android apps, in a web app and in a Mac app for macOS 11 or later.

What works: a full set of habit tools (quizzes, Recaps, Streaks, Shorts and spaced repetition), eleven languages, and apps for almost any screen.

What to check before you pay:

  • The price depends on where you buy. Headway says there is “no single fixed price”: it varies by region, currency, website or app store, and promotion.
  • Website plans renew at twice the first price. Each plan on Headway’s US price page costs exactly double after its first period (details below).
  • The free trial is tied to a yearly plan, according to Headway’s FAQ page.
  • Refunds depend on the channel. App Store and Google Play purchases are refunded through Apple or Google; website purchases are at Headway’s discretion.

One more thing that confuses searchers: Headway’s FAQ page says the book app is unrelated to Headway therapy and to Headway Capital.

What Headway costs, and why your price may differ

Headway’s US price page sells three plans:

Plan First period After that
4 weeks USD 19.99 USD 39.98 every 4 weeks
12 weeks USD 39.99 USD 79.98 every 12 weeks
24 weeks USD 59.99 USD 119.98 every 24 weeks

The page adds that prices “may vary by region, special promotions, and seasonal offers”.

In the App Store, Headway’s items carry no billing period in their names. The US store lists items from USD 12.99 to USD 89.99. Because the periods are not labeled, we cannot tell you what a month or a year of Headway costs in the App Store, and we will not guess.

So, how much does Headway cost per month? Its website does not sell a monthly plan. The shortest is four weeks: USD 19.99 for the first period, then USD 39.98.

What Blinkist costs, in brief

Blinkist’s website sells yearly plans only. On the US website, Premium costs USD 79.99 for the first year and USD 99.99 at renewal. Monthly billing exists only through the app stores, where the US items labeled one month cost USD 12.99 and USD 15.99. Our Blinkist review breaks down Premium, Pro and every channel.

  • Headway: the Free Daily Read gives you one pre-selected summary a day, with no card needed. A 7-day trial comes with the yearly plan, once per app store account.
  • Blinkist: the free Basic plan gives one hand-picked title a day. Blinkist says a 7-day trial of the yearly plan is offered “in some cases”.
  • Guri Wise: free audio previews on book pages, with no account. A 7-day free trial on monthly or yearly, with a card required.

Our guide to free book summaries lists the other no-cost options, with the catch of each.

Languages, devices and sharing

Headway lists eleven languages and runs on iPhone, Android, the web and Mac. We found no second-account plan on its pages, although its App Store listing shows support for Apple’s Family Sharing.

Blinkist lists four languages and runs on mobile, the web and CarPlay. Its Premium plan adds a second Premium account that you can give to one other person.

Guri Wise is in English, and one subscription covers two accounts, each with its own library.

Which one should you pick?

Our editorial view, by situation:

If you Pick
Need streaks and quizzes to keep reading Headway
Read summaries in French, Italian, Polish, Japanese, Czech, Romanian or Hungarian Headway, which lists all seven; Blinkist does not
Want text and audio for two people on one plan, in English, German, Spanish or Portuguese Blinkist
Want podcast summaries as well as books Blinkist
Want to see a goal-based path before paying and share one plan across two accounts Guri Wise

A goal-based alternative: Guri Wise

Headway builds your plan from an onboarding quiz. Guri Wise, which we make, shows the plan in the open. On the website, anyone can browse goals such as Master Your Habits, Increase Resilience and Master Your Habits, or follow an ordered reading path like The Habit Starter Kit or The Science of Lasting Change, without creating an account. The goals reach well beyond self-help: The Mountain Is You sits under Increase Resilience, Attached under Strengthen Relationship, and How Brands Grow under Improve Marketing.

Each summary covers a nonfiction book in about 15 minutes. Headway says people write and review its summaries; ours are written in our own words through an AI-augmented process and narrated with AI voices. Two accounts, each with its own library, cost USD 5.99 a month or USD 59.99 a year together, and either plan starts with a 7-day free trial (card required).

Guri Wise is built around goals and reading paths rather than streaks and quizzes. With a subscription you hear the full summary; on the website, each book page gives the introduction and conclusion in writing, with a one-line note on every chapter. If streaks and quizzes are what keep you reading, Headway does that better.
