There is no single best book summary app. The right one depends on what you want from it: depth on one book, a daily habit, business reading, a low price, visual lessons, or audio you can fit into a commute. This page puts seven apps side by side so you can match one to your situation.
Every competitor price and feature below was read on that company’s own website, help pages or App Store listing on October 6, 2026, and each one links to its source. There are no affiliate links on this page. One of the seven apps, Guri Wise, is ours, and we say so wherever it appears.

How we compared them
For each app we read its pricing page, its help center or frequently asked questions, and its App Store listings, all on the same day. Catalog sizes are each company’s own figures, quoted as “says”, because every company counts differently (some include podcasts, articles or topic guides). We did not rank the apps by a score. Instead, each section below names what that app does best and where it beats Guri Wise, so you can weigh our own app against the others fairly.
Blinkist: best for switching between text and audio
Blinkist summarizes nonfiction books and podcast episodes, and its summaries can be read or played. It lists four languages, includes a second Premium account on its paid plan, and lets paid subscribers download audio for offline listening in the mobile apps. Its website sells only yearly plans; monthly billing goes through the app stores.
Best for: podcast summaries, and readers in German, Spanish or Portuguese. Our Blinkist review covers prices in every channel and whether it is worth it for you.
Shortform: best for depth
Shortform’s guides go further than a summary. Shortform describes commentary on how other experts approach the topic, interactive exercises, highlights and notes, PDF downloads and audio narration of every guide. On the US website it costs USD 24.00 a month (or USD 16.42 a month billed annually), and USD 23.99 a month on the US App Store.
Better than Guri Wise for: readers who want close to the full argument of one book and will do the exercises. See Shortform vs Blinkist for the trade between depth and time.
Headway: best for building a daily habit
Headway gives you text and audio summaries of about 15 minutes and wraps them in habit tools: a learning plan from an onboarding quiz, quizzes, Recaps, Streaks and Shorts, plus spaced-repetition tools in Premium. Headway says there is “no single fixed price”, and its website plans renew at twice the first-period price.
Better than Guri Wise for: streaks and quizzes, and its eleven languages, from Italian to Japanese. Headway vs Blinkist compares the two in detail.
getAbstract: best for business reading, students and teams
getAbstract covers nonfiction books, articles and talks in text and audio, and states the largest catalog in this comparison. Its 3-day trial needs no credit card. Verified students can use the free Student Starter plan, which getAbstract says includes 5,000 summaries, audio and offline sync, but no PDF, ePub or MP3 downloads and no highlighting. Pro includes online and offline access, and a team plan for five people is listed.
Better than Guri Wise for: business-focused reading, students (free with verification) and companies buying for a team.
StoryShots: best for a low US dollar price
StoryShots offers free 5-minute summaries in text and audio. Premium adds 15-minute key ideas, 45-minute chapter-by-chapter Deep Dives, PDF and infographic downloads, offline listening, highlights and notes. Its upgrade page lists USD 5.99 a month, USD 39.99 a year after a 3-day free trial, or USD 59.99 for lifetime access. It also generates an AI summary of any book you name: one a day free, five a day on Premium.
One caution: an older StoryShots plans page still shows different prices and terms. The figures here come from the upgrade page inside its web app, which was current when we read it. StoryShots states no catalog size we could confirm, so we do not give one.
Better than Guri Wise for: a low price in US dollars, and text as well as audio.
Imprint: best for visual learners
Imprint turns books into visual lessons; by its own account, a chapter takes two minutes or less. It is in English only. Its offer page lists USD 74.99 a year, or USD 52.49 for the first year. Its trial terms and catalog size did not appear on the pages we read.
Better than Guri Wise for: people who take in ideas better through pictures and diagrams than through listening.
Is there a good free book summary app?
Free options differ a lot. Blinkist’s Basic plan gives one hand-picked title a day, Headway’s Free Daily Read gives one pre-selected summary a day, StoryShots offers free 5-minute summaries, getAbstract is free for verified students, and Guri Wise has free audio previews on its book pages. Our guide to free book summaries covers these and other free sources in detail.
Book summary apps or book summary websites?
Websites are the quickest way to try a service: you can see what a summary looks like before you install anything. Apps are where most services put the full experience, such as audio, saved progress and, for some, offline downloads. Most services in this comparison use both, with a website to browse and an app to read or listen. If you are comparing websites only, start with the free sources guide above.
Where Guri Wise fits
Guri Wise is ours. It is built for listening: audio summaries of nonfiction books, about 15 minutes each. They are summaries, not recordings of the complete original books, written in our own words through an AI-augmented process and narrated with AI voices.
One subscription, Guri Wise Unlimited, covers two accounts, each with its own library, for USD 5.99 a month or USD 59.99 a year after a 7-day free trial (card required). Previews are free on the website with no account. The website is also where you explore the catalog and discover reading paths, such as The Fast Learner’s Foundation, or start from a goal like Learn Faster or Understand the World on Discover.
Its limits: it covers nonfiction only, and it is built for listening first. Book pages show the written introduction and conclusion and a guide to each chapter, but if reading complete summaries as text matters most to you, Blinkist, Shortform, Headway, getAbstract or StoryShots fit better. For a closer look at one summary, chapter by chapter, see our book summary app page.

Quick answers
What’s better than Blinkist?
It depends on what you need: Shortform for depth, Headway for habit tools, getAbstract for business and teams, and Guri Wise for goal-based audio summaries with two accounts on one plan. The tables above show where each one differs, and our Blinkist review goes deeper on Blinkist itself.
Is Blinkist really free?
Partly. Blinkist’s free Basic plan gives you one hand-picked title a day; the full library needs Premium or Pro.
Which is the best free book summary app?
That depends on what “free” needs to cover: a daily title, short summaries, a student plan or previews. The section above lists each free option, and Free Book Summaries goes further.
